The Lion’s Pantry announces the showing of The Starfish Throwers-a documentary film, on Tuesday, November 13, at 6:00 pm in Room 350, Health and Human Development Building on the Penn State University Park campus. This event is a component of The Lion’s Pantry’s awareness and engagement activities throughout National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week from November 7-14. This event is free and open to the public.

Tiana Williams, Lion’s Pantry President, describes, “This film is powerful because it shows that there is always more than one way to solve a problem. You can use your own unique talents to make a difference, however large or small.”

The Lion’s Pantry’s mission explains how it strives to make a difference: to address and mitigate student hunger at Penn State University Park campus, and its purpose is to provide sustenance to Penn State students experiencing food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as “the lack of reliable access to sufficient quantities of affordable, nutritious food,” which studies show affects 48% of students at 2 and 4-year universities (Students Against Hunger, 2016). The Lion’s Pantry fights this prevalent issue through providing food and other resources to students, but also through volunteer and community education and engagement.

“This film caused me to leave questioning how I would leave my mark at Penn State and on the world,” said Spencer Wallace, Lion’s Pantry Outreach Coordinator.

National Hunger and Homelessness week gathers together people across the country and highlights these critical topics. This movie screening, discussion, and engagement opportunity will encourage students to #ThrowStarfish and create their own impact; while being more educated about the issues facing their peers.
